The award winning and highly acclaimed band Le Vent du Nord are a leading force in Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s exciting and progressive Francophone folk movement. The group\u2019s vast repertoire draws from both traditional sources and original compositions, while their highly rhythmic and soulful music, rooted in the Celtic diaspora, is enhanced with a broad range of global influences.<\/p>\n

Since first launching in August 2002, Le Vent du Nord have enjoyed meteoric success, performing well over 2,400 concerts<\/strong> over 4 continents, released 13 albums<\/strong> and racking up several prestigious awards, including a Grand Prix du Disque Charles Cros<\/strong>, two Junos<\/strong> (Canada\u2019s Grammys), a F\u00e9lix<\/strong> at ADISQ, a Canadian Folk Music Award<\/strong>, and \u201cArtist of the Year<\/strong>\u201d at Folk Alliance Annual Gala.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The group regularly appear on Canadian, American, French, and UK television and radio and have participated in a wide variety of special musical projects that exhibit their great finesse and flexibility. They\u2019ve collaborated and performed with a diverse range of artists including: Harry Manx, V\u00e4sen, Dervish, The Chieftains, Breton musical pioneer Yann-Fa\u00f1ch Kemener, Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois roots legend and master storyteller Michel Faubert, the Scottish folk band Breabach, Gaelic singer Julie Fowlis, and the trans-Mediterranean ensemble Constantinople.<\/p>\n

Le Vent du Nord look beyond the standard approaches to tradition in their collaborations and they\u2019ve also created a symphonic concert that, according to Voir Montreal<\/em>, \u201cputs all traditional folk naysayers to shame.\u201d<\/p>\n

Born into a family in love with words, songs and stories, everything was in place to nurture the young man who was already playing with a clarinet, the living room piano and the books waiting for him in his great-grandfather's cabinet. He first studied jazz piano before discovering the hurdy-gurdy. He built several instruments himself before joining the group Ad Vielle que Pourra<\/strong>, with whom he began his career in the North American folk scene. Inspired by his grandmother's songs, he dove into Quebec traditional music to find his voice and his craft. Since then, he has explored the local repertoire while adding his own compositions. In 2002, he co-founded Le Vent du Nord<\/strong>, with whom he has performed more than 2,400 concerts and recorded 13 albums<\/strong>. In parallel, he has also released 3 albums with Olivier Demers. In 2015, he released Maison de bois<\/a>, his first solo singer-songwriter album, shortly after receiving the CALQ Award<\/strong> for Creator of the Year in Mont\u00e9r\u00e9gie. Maison de pierres<\/a>, released in fall 2020, is the second album in his solo trilogy project. Creating a unique synergy, the solo project evolved into a duo alongside double bassist Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Samson, with the release of CoolTrad<\/a> in 2024 (nominated for both the Opus and the F\u00e9lix \u2013 Trad Album 2024). A versatile musician, he has also performed and\/or written for artists such as Voivod<\/strong>, Genevi\u00e8ve Jodoin<\/strong>, Daniel Bellegarde<\/strong>, Chlo\u00e9 Ste-Marie<\/strong>, Nuala Kennedy<\/strong>, Michel Faubert<\/strong>, Dobacaracol<\/strong>, Breabach<\/strong>, V\u00e4sen<\/strong>, Galant tu perds ton temps<\/strong>, Sharon Shannon<\/strong>, etc.<\/p>

He is co-founder of La Veill\u00e9e de l'avant-veille<\/a> in Montreal (28 editions) and of La Compagnie du Nord<\/a> alongside his partner, producer and manager Genevi\u00e8ve Nadeau, and serves as president of the Festival Chants de Vielles<\/a> in his hometown of Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu (21 editions).<\/p>

On special occasions, he takes the stage with his writer father for Carnets de notes<\/em>, a poetry and song performance. He also published his first poetry collection with Triptyque in spring 2021. Under the direction of Normand Baillargeon<\/strong>, he contributed to a collective tribute to Georges Brassens, published by Lem\u00e9ac in 2021. He also co-wrote, with M. Baillargeon, the preface to the book En montant la rivi\u00e8re<\/em>, published by M\u00e9moire d'encrier in 2023. In addition to the lectures he gives on the history of trad music and turlute, he authored an introductory guide to Quebec trad music for the Conseil qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois de la musique, participated in the creation of the CQPV's first online course, TRAD 666<\/a>, in collaboration with several artists, and has published articles for the OSM and the NFB.<\/p>

In 2024, he recorded several segments for the television program La Grande Veill\u00e9e<\/em> (broadcast on ARTV and Ici T\u00e9l\u00e9), hosted the program Porteurs de Trad<\/em> (broadcast on Ici Musique), and was honoured with the title of Patriote de l'ann\u00e9e by the Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 nationale des Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois Richelieu-Saint-Laurent (SNQRSL).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Andr\u00e9 Brunet was born in Lacolle, in Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s Mont\u00e9r\u00e9gie region. Growing up, it was his parents who first noticed his keen interest in music and encouraged him to follow his passion. Andr\u00e9\u2019s first love was for the violin and, at the age of nine, he began taking lessons.<\/p>\n

Along with brother R\u00e9jean, he created Les Fr\u00e8res Brunet<\/em> and went on to record several albums and perform at various concerts around the world. In 1997, Andr\u00e9\u2019s unwavering energy and refined style earned him a spot with La Bottine Souriante<\/em><\/a>, with whom he toured more than 15 countries over the course of 10 years. Although his journey with La Bottine Souriante<\/em> came to an end in 2006, Andr\u00e9 remained immersed in traditional music. He joined Le Vent du Nord in 2016.<\/p>\n

At the Grand Masters Fiddling Competition in 2008, Andr\u00e9 took home the top award (the first time a Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois had won this prestigious honour!). Between 2004 and 2017 he toured with De Temps Antan<\/em><\/a> and since 2018, he has been a member of Le Vent du Nord<\/em>. His passion for traditional Qu\u00e9bec music continues to pave the way for dance and swing enthusiasts the world over.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

R\u00e9jean started playing traditional Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois music as a very young boy, growing up in the village of Lacolle, Qu\u00e9bec.<\/p>\n

After performing as a duo with his brother Andr\u00e9 (well-known for his work with La Bottine Souriante<\/em><\/a> and the Celtic fiddle festival) and recording three albums, R\u00e9jean joined La Vol\u00e9e d\u2019Castors<\/em>. He toured with them for 8 years, performing in Europe, Canada and the U.S. and they released 5 albums. R\u00e9jean is also frequently invited by traditional musicians such as Sabin Jacques, Richard Forest and Gaston Nolet to join them on stage or in the recording studio. Trained as a violinist and also a guitarist, Olivier started out in chamber music and later moved on to jazz. His great versatility allowed him to work with a wide range of artists (La Bottine Souriante<\/a><\/em>, Cirque du Soleil<\/em>, Michel Faubert<\/em>, The Bills<\/em>, Dany B\u00e9dar<\/em>, Boom Desjardins<\/em>, Les Ours<\/em>, Mario Pelchat<\/em>, Ovo<\/em>) as well as to compose music for the NFB [National Film Board of Canada] and commercials.<\/p>

He now describes himself as a violoneux (fiddler), having devoted the past ten years of his life to traditional music.<\/p>

He has played with MontcorbieR<\/em><\/a>, was part of the duo Boulerice-Demers (two albums, among which Un peu d\u2019ci, un peu d\u2019\u00e7a<\/em>, was named as Canada\u2019s best traditional music album for 2006) and has been very active in promoting the tradition as co-founder of La Veill\u00e9e de l\u2019avant-veille<\/em>, Roues et Archets record label and as co-organiser of the Chants de Vielles festival<\/em> in Qu\u00e9bec.<\/p>

Andr\u00e9 (D\u00e9d\u00e9) is a musician and singer born in St-C\u00f4me, Lanaudi\u00e8re. It was in his native village, nicknamed the capital of traditional Quebec song, as well as in his maternal family, that Andr\u00e9 discovered folk music. It was in high school that he was introduced to traditional arts. He studied guitar at Joliette and St-Laurent college.<\/span><\/p>

In 2005, he founded the group \u201cLa Girofl\u00e9e\u201d with childhood friends. It\u2019s with this group that he recorded his first album in 2008: \u201cJ\u2019ai dans la m\u00e9moire\u201d. They revisit together several laments and songs from St-C\u00f4me.<\/span><\/p>

He participates in the musical creation of Cirque Alfonse for three of their shows: La Brunante, Timber! And Barbu foire \u00e9lectro Trad. This experience will allow him to perform more than 700 times on stage in more than 16 different countries. In 2015, with his friend and colleague D\u00e2vi Simard, he rearranged the pieces taken from the last show to list them on the album \u201cMusique de barbus\u201d.<\/span><\/p>

During the same period he joined the group R\u00e9veillons! With which he recorded the group's third album: \u201c\u00c0 la chasse pour chasser\u201d, and performed with them in several festivals in Canada and Europe.<\/span><\/p>

Andr\u00e9's powerful and warm voice as well as his guitar pick shot have been heard in the 4 corners of the planet. For the last year he has been working on his solo project \u201cWelly\u201d, a reinterpretation of the songs performed by his great-grandfather Welly Lepage.<\/span><\/p>
